How much time can AI actually save a contractor?

Stockton Dunkley · October 12, 2026 · 2 min read
Short answerFor most contractors the savings come from repeated writing and reading tasks: turning notes into documents, finding answers in long specs, and drafting emails and reports. In my own work, one weekly review task went from about 120 minutes to about 30. That is roughly 78 hours a year from a single workflow.

Where the time actually comes from

AI does not frame a wall or pull wire. The hours it gives back come from the office side of the job, and specifically from work that is repeated, text heavy, and follows a pattern. In construction that usually means:

Where it does not save time

Anything that depends on judgment, relationships, or being physically on site. AI also adds time if nobody checks its output, because a confident wrong answer in a document with your name on it costs more than it saved. The real gain is that checking a draft is much faster than writing one.

A real example

The first workflow I built was for a weekly review I run as a project manager in the mechanical trade. It used to take about two hours. With a custom AI workflow it takes about thirty minutes, and it is still in use today. Ninety minutes saved, every week, adds up to roughly 78 hours a year from one task.

How to estimate it for your own company

  1. List the tasks your office repeats every week.
  2. Write down roughly how long each one takes and how often it happens.
  3. Circle the ones that are mostly reading or writing.
  4. Assume a well built workflow cuts those by half or more, then check that assumption on one task before trusting it.

The circled task with the biggest number is where to start. One workflow that works beats ten that nobody uses.

Common questions

Will AI replace my office staff?

No. It removes the repetitive part of their work so they spend more time on the part that needs judgment. Someone still has to check every output before it leaves the office.

Do I need new software?

Usually not. Most workflows run on tools your team can already open in a browser, and can connect to software you already use.

How fast will I see results?

On a single well chosen task, usually within the first couple of weeks of using it.
